PAIGE WEST Apprentice Hydrotherapist
I first came to buddy’s in early 2010 as I was studying animal management at Southdown’s college and Buddy’s Hydro was my last placement for work experience before I was due to finish to find a veterinary nurse internship. However I was very quick to change my mind after spending my two weeks at Buddy’s as this gave me a completely different view on careers in the animal industry. At first I didn’t really know much about hydrotherapy, and the benefits that dogs gain from coming to buddy’s, it was only after meeting a few of the treatment dogs e.g. puzzle and Jig and finding out what conditions they had, that I truly understood the huge benefits hydrotherapy gave to aid in rehabilitating dogs back to their happy playful self. This really inspired me to look into hydrotherapy and the training required to be a Canine Hydrotherapist – I then spoke to Douglas to ask if I could be a part of the Buddy’s team. Fortunately for me, I am now the Apprentice at Buddy’s Hydro and will be completing my training at Grey friars in October 2011. I am very proud to be a part of the team, and just to see dogs so excited to come in and swim with us and their progress makes it all worthwhile!
ALICIA ROSE NYMAN Hydrotherapy Assistant
My name is Alicia, I am 17 years old and I have been volunteering at Buddy’s since May 2011. I started out by doing my college work experience here for two weeks and decided I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to volunteer. I currently study Animal Management at South Downs College and have one more year of study left. After college I hope to go onto university to study a degree in Animal Welfare and Behaviour. I love working at Buddy’s because it is such a friendly and happy environment to work in and everyone I work with feels like family to me.... and so do all the dogs!
JEMMA POWELL Apprentice Hydrotherapist
Hey I’m Jemma, and I work at Buddy’s as a second apprentice, I love watching the dogs’ progress and see them getting happier and healthier. I discovered Buddy’s through college when I was asking around for advice about my dog Jed. He broke his front leg at his shoulder in August 2010 whilst running, and then he had it pinned and plated, unfortunately it wouldn’t repair and the pin actually came lose, so we had to come to the decision of having the leg removed. It was an awful experience and after time he started to lose his personality and became quite weak and lifeless. I then started work experience for college at Buddy’s and fell in love with the whole experience! Our vet advised hydrotherapy for Jed and referred us to a centre they had used before but it soon became very clear that the lady wasn’t trained so we stopped Jed’s treatment there and took him to Buddy’s and I cannot believe the effect this has had on him, he is like a puppy again! We have our Jed back! My dream at Buddy’s is to help give dogs a better quality of life through the treatment of hydrotherapy.
LISA WOOD Hydrotherapy Assistant
My name is Lisa and I am 16 years old – my dad (Doug) is the owner of Buddy’s Hydro and I have been working with him since we opened in 2009. I love working with the many types of dogs coming to buddy’s, I have been inspired to help other dog’s by my own dog Buddy who has been so brave through his ordeal of hip dysplasia, I love swimming fun swim dogs and I am pictured here with one of my favourites Basil.
At present I attend South Downs College to further my education.
SHARON SMITH Admin & Marketing Assistant
My name is Sharon and I help out at Buddy’s mainly on a Tuesday evening and Saturday morning doing anything from mopping floors to showering and drying dogs and also marketing work for Buddy’s. As you can see from my picture, I’ve even been known to venture into the pool and have a go at swimming our dogs: Buddy, Sam and Smudge and I can confirm that it’s not as easy as it looks so I think I’ll leave that part to the professionals and stick to my mopping!!
